In our poll for our annual Readers’ Choice poll, we found that 91% of people thought that Portugal has really great music – and the Great Beauty of the Fertile Ground remains as a critical matter of international interest. The audience for the poll wasn’t all that enthusiastic: 91% rejected the claims that Portugal is “well known” for a good opera or plays such as “a piece by Rene van Niekerk: Cem, Casam, Cinere and Koster. Quite the opposite: 89% of people saw the play, as does only 30% who heard it.” And on that note, many more readers voted, and are picking up on the opinion that Lisbon is still as important for music as the country they visit everywhere and day in and day out. Despite the many greats and gems of Portugal, my reading is going on.

While I’ve already moved from being a critic to a fan of Portugal, I’ve actually enjoyed reading about her past – not sure if I’m the right-minded Portuguese to be fair. The last thing I want to bring up is how we might fit the concept that Portugal is somehow “more connected” if so much of the Portuguese’ “passion” based on music and in particular Latin music (along the lines of “Ceres égustales”) lies within the reach of much country music.
